SATURDAY FEBRUARY 11 (PHILADELPHIA)
PHRESH: A CELEBRATION OF WOMEN IN HIP-HOP “Industry rule number four thousand and eighty: record company people are shady,” went the classic A Tribe Called Quest line nearly 15 years ago. Such has remained the case today – especially when it comes to women and hip-hop. Record labels have made the mainstream almost impenetrable for women – unless they pick a hyper-sexualized identity like L’il Kim or can juggle more talents than their male counterparts, like Missy Elliott or Lauryn Hill. Enter: PHRESH. One-stop-shopping for ladies who love hip-hop and may wish to pursue a career in it, the full day of events includes DJing and b-girling workshops, a panel discussion, and a film screening. The evening culminates with a multimedia performance by Montähz and rebel rap-rocker Melene Younglao. PHRESH indicates that there is indeed a renaissance a-brew. THURSDAY FEBRUARY 16 (NYC)
MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE FILM & CULTURE SERIES Film Screening: 'Bastards Of The Party' Surrounded by death and the brutal lifestyle that feeds it, a Los Angeles gangbanger explores the history of Southern California street gangs from the 1950s through the 1990s in an attempt to fully understand his existence. Eloquently and passionately directed, Bastards of the Party humanizes the staggering casualties of the LA gang wars. The title of this gripping examination of five decades of gang violence in Southern California refers to the notorious Los Angeles street gangs the Crips and the Bloods, the so-called bastard children of the radical 60s Black Panther Party. Incorporating a wealth of archival photos and footage of African Americans throughout history, the film traces the journey of blacks in this country from their migration from the South to the West at the start of the industrial revolution to their establishment of local, neighborhood, and musical clubs in the 1950s. The documentary chronicles the rise of the Crips, who came about in the late 1960s in order to fight racist white gangs. Interviews with L.A. historian Mike Davis, author of the book City of Quartz, fill in the historical blanks about how innocent social clubs, like the Baby Slausons-christened gangs by law enforcement-set in motion the staggering dance of death between police and blacks that would come to haunt future generations. Bastards frankly points an accusing finger at the failure of black leadership, which, together with the migration of jobs, allowed gang subculture to proliferate. That proliferation, abetted by police instigation that keeps gang wars alive (even during their self-imposed truces) helps to explain why many parts of Southern California play host to an endless parade of coffins. 'Bastards of the Party' was named Best Documentary at the American Black Film Festival. Live Performance By : RL Tha Gifted 1 Panel Discussion : 'Building A Powerful Future' Featuring Dr. Luticia Santipriya Doors open at 6:15PM - Seating is on a first come basis Program begins at 7:00PM @ Medgar Evers CollegeFounders Auditorium1650 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn, NY For more info: http://www.mec.cuny.edu/filmandcultureseries/

MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE FILM & CULTURE SERIES Film Screening: 'Favela Rising' The dilemma of those who live in Rio's slums and struggle to overcome unbelievable poverty and gang violence seems even more painful since their favelas overlook one of the world's most beautiful beaches. This electrifying film depicts the journey of one remarkable individual who emerged from the favelas to create the nonviolent flowering of Afro-Brazilian culture known as Afro-reggae. Favela Rising is set in the grim reality of the picturesque slums overlooking Rio de Janeiro. The documentary tells the story of a place, a man, a moment, a movement, and, ultimately, a miracle. The place is Vigario Geral, the worst of Rio's favelas, or slums, where barbaric drug armies battling corrupt police were the norm a decade ago, and drug dealers were the favela's only role models. The man is Anderson Sa, a Vigario native who saw his first deadly street violence at age 10. The moment is August 1993, when cops massacred 21 innocent favela residents in response to the killing of four of their own by a Vigario drug lord. The movement is AfroReggae, a nonviolent flowering of Afro-Brazilian culture through dance, theater and popular percussion-fueled reggae bands, which Sa and some of his contemporaries founded in response to the massacre. 'Music is an instrument of change,' says one of the AfroReggae founders. The drug lords even began to send their own kids to the AfroReggae programs. Miraculous as that seems, that's not the only miracle in this miracle of a film. Live Performance Featuring : Capoeira Action To AfroReggae BeatsPanel Discussion : 'Brooklyn To Brazil - Creating Unity For Strentgh'Featuring Omali Yeshitela of the African People's Socialist Party Doors open at 6:15PM - Seating is on a first come basis Program begins at 7:00PM @ Medgar Evers CollegeFounders Auditorium1650 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn, NY For more info: http://www.mec.cuny.edu/filmandcultureseries/
