African Diaspora Film Festival

First AnnualAfrican Diaspora Summer Film SeriesAUGUST 2006All screenings at The Riverside Theatre91 Claremont Ave. at 120th Street Tel: 212-870-6784Welcome to the world of the Contemporary African Diaspora Film Festival. In our reality, people from diverse races, nationalities and backgrounds come together to enjoy important cinematic works of creativity, intellectual expansion, identity, and equality. In this world there are no boundaries around people because they are embraced in a universal understanding of humanity. This is the element of commonality that weaves through this annual event of images from the African Diaspora.Today more than at any other time there are more films by black directors, more films on the black experience and more films with featured black actors enjoyed by all audiences. Notwithstanding, the international Black communities, whether in Europe, Latin America or Africa, continue to play a disproportionately marginal role in the art of cinema. Further, many creative and visionary films lay languid, collecting dust without the light of a screening owing to the lack of distribution outlets that showcase the films of our experience. The images of stereotypes, myths and deprived cultural experiences continue to be drawn out while talented people of color proceed to run up against the infamous "numbers" game with respect as to how many directors or films of color can an "already permeated" market absorb.to present these films to diverse audiences, redesign the Black cinema experience and strengthen the role of African descent directors in contemporary world cinema. In response to this mission, ADFF features the work of emerging and established filmmakers of color. Most important, ADFF distinguishes itself through its presentation of outstanding works that shine a different or comprehensive light on African Diaspora life and culture --no matter what the filmmaker’s race or nationality

Friday, August 18th @7pm"The Diner"Veteran actor Bernie Casey makes his debut as a writer and director with this allegorical drama.

Saturday, August 19 @ 4:30pm "Sisters In Cinema"Homage to African American women filmmaker, who against all odds made history.

Festival for Gender Equality

In a world where boys are still made fun of for wanting to jump double-dutch and girls are still kicked off the basketball courts because they might "break a nail" while playing, Girls for Gender Equity is proud to organize the first New York City Festival for Gender Equality on August 27th 11am – 4pm. Open to all New Yorkers, it will be held at Von King Park in Brooklyn, NY and feature entertainment by musicians, spoken word artists, and theater performers; workshops and other fun activities for children and adults; free food and giveaways; and appearances from local politicians. Over 50 community organizations will participate including Brooklyn Children's Museum, Forest Hills Community House, Global Action Project, Loisaida, New York Police Department, Planned Parenthood, Schomburg Center, Street Harassment Project, and Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls. The Gender Equality Festival is a free public event for education, networking, resource sharing, community interaction, arts and recreation. Workshops on a wide variety of topics – responding to street harassment, media literacy, HIV/AIDS, communicating with your child, youth leadership, yoga, health care access, democratic education and more – will be offered throughout the day to children and adults. The Grand Street Campus girls' soccer team will lead a mother-daughter soccer clinic, where girls and their sisters, mothers, cousins, friends, aunts and grandmothers are all invited to learn basic skills and then show them off in a short game. Representing local politics at the event are Councilwoman Helen Sears, Democratic Senate nominee Jonathan Tasini, Democratic Congressional candidate Chris Owens, Green Party Lt Governor candidate Alison Duncan, and State Senator Carl Andrews (D). Not to be missed are performances by hip hop artist Carlethal, poet and educator Piper Anderson, singer/songwriter Chris Pureka, activist dance and theater group Zany Angels, queer youth performers Generation Q, Palestinian stand-up comedian and co-founder of the New York Arab American Comedy Festival Maysoon Zayid, and the folk-hip hop hybrid sounds of Mahogany. The afternoon will wind down with a keynote speech from Councilwoman Yvette Clarke! Find out how to register for this event by clicking on http://www.gges.info/latest-news.php or contact Jess intern@gges.info.

Claire Falkenstein: Structure and Flow
10:00 AM

Falkenstein's best works fuse painting and sculpture by inviting such middlebrow enthusiasms as glass-blowing, jewelry-making and home-decorating into the mix. At a time when eccentricity seems to be in short supply, and artists seem to stick to conventions more than they used to, it's refreshing to see Falkenstein's nutty and often dazzling attempts to have it all in one work.

Red Hot Chili Peppers
7:30 PM
$54.50

Few rock groups of the '80s broke as many musical barriers and were as original as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Creating an intoxicating new musical style by combining funk and punk rock -- with an explosive stage show to boot, usually headlining the oft-forgotten accessory, the athletic sock -- the Chili Peppers still reign supreme in the dawn of the 21st century.
